House of Mittens – Short Story

Mittens leapt from her master’s lap when he made a funny noise. She ran to the kitchen table and jumped up with a calm demeanor, licking her whiskers. The greasy hands of her master made her feel unclean. Master was making more loud noises when he looked out the clear barrier to the outside. He put his face to the clear barrier. There was a sparkly light coming from the large box place next door. Wispy steam floated into the sky from the large box thing. Her master made the noise, “Fire” followed by “All dead?” Mittens saw her jangly toys, looking untouched and innocent. She pounced.

She cocked her head sideways when master got louder. Jumping to the clear barrier she tried to nuzzle her master but he pushed her away. She shook her head and gazed out the clear barrier. There weren’t any flappy mouse creatures flying around so she stared at the bright, steamy place next door and noticed some other humans with round hats pulling out long, human-sized bags. The steamy cloud from the large box wasn’t very interesting so she leapt down and took a nap.

When she woke up on the comfy bed she yawned and went to the poo box. She shoveled the sand stuff, hiding her indecency and continued to the kitchen. Everything was dark. Her eyes adjusted quickly, giving her clarity.

The change in her eyesight gave her a burst of energy and created an urge to bolt through the kitchen, to where her hard food lay in a container. After thoroughly filling her belly she went to the clear barrier where she perched. The empty quiet told Mittens that his master was taking his long-nap. Outside, beyond the clear barrier, she also noticed that the place next door was completely dark. Another sign that it was long-nap time. That was until Mittens lifted her tiny nose and saw a figure in the large square.

The figure was blurry but she knew it was a person. The top part of the box was completely melted away, like when her owner removes the top part of her hard food container. Why would a human want to hang around a large box thing without a covering? Very strange. The person stood there for a long time and only stared back. They must be as bored as she was. After some time, Mittens jumped down and went to take a nap.

When her master woke, he gave her snuggles and left her alone, the door closed in a hard thud. For what felt like an eternity her master came home and gave her more snuggles. He opened something that made her mouth water. He put down a container and walked away. She dove face first into the salty soft food and gobbled it down.

With a full belly she plopped down on the carpet and saw her master walking upstairs. In the shiny wall rectangle there was another face, not her masters. She made a wide mouthed meow at the audacity that someone else might be in their home. But she soon became bored and trotted to her cozy, familiar smelling bed. Time for another nap? Yes!

When she popped her head up again the house was quiet, there was no loud racket from the rectangular thing from the big room. Its must’ve been time for her master’s long-nap. She sniffed. There was an unfamiliar aroma in the air. Faint but still there, smelling like if master heated something too long.

Another faint presence, a disturbance of air in the large room. Her head lowered and her body crouched as she leaned around the couch. A human was there, standing by the shelf. Or something like a human. The upper body was human shaped, but the bottom…. Another creature maybe. It floated like a water creature with wisps of clear cloth hanging above the ground. The smell was stronger here. Unfamiliar and unpleasant the human figure shimmered in the shadows. Why would master allow such a thing to be in his home, staring at the wall for so long?

When the thing refused to move, she slinked away cautiously, making sure it didn’t hear her. Her jangly toy was lying there next to her, not moving, like the thing in the big room. The toy wouldn’t fight back and was a lot smaller. It was asking to be played with. After she batted it around, she grew bored again and took a nap.

It felt like a long-nap. When she opened her eyes, the thing was still there. Oh no, wait. It wasn’t the thing. It was her master, standing, looking at the shelf with hands at his sides. He stared at the shelf curiously and turned around, gazing around the big room, and then Mittens. He might come over to pick her up. She started licking her paw. She wasn’t in the mood.

But he didn’t stop to pet her. He walked to the clear barrier and looked out, probably gazing at birds and little scurrying creatures. When he came closer, his breath making steam on the barrier, the person on the other side was not his own face. Usually when you look at the clear barrier stuff you should see yourself, shouldn’t you? Not some other face looking back. This must’ve been the thing that was in the living room. What was it doing outside, floating and drifting like that? Master seemed to look past the thing’s blank staring eyes, over at the crumbling large box next door. The human face didn’t move but hot steam seemed to waft from it, like it was hot.

Mittens gave a side glance and wondered away, assuming the human face would get bored and go away. Master left again and she decided to nap. Another long-nap would do her good especially surrounded by her jangly toys and her bed.

Later, after her master arrived home and heated up some soft food, he left to take a long-nap. Her vision changed when he went upstairs so that she could see better. She soon followed and went up to his large bed box. When she reached the hallway, she lowered her head, sensing movement that was unfamiliar. Her nose twitched. The smell was back. The shuffling of blankets was heard which meant master was still awake.

Mittens peaked around the corner into his room. She nearly jumped back when she saw her master in his bed, the clear human figure was floating above him. As her chest beat slower the shape drifted closer to master, moving its arms as if to grasp him by the neck. It lurked there, hovering in midair while master tussled with the blankets. Could the master not see it! Its clear arms came to the blankets around his neck. The blankets tightened. Master had a look of surprise when the human figure pushed down with bony hands.

She became spooked by the sudden movements and bolted away. She started licking her paws. They had been dirty walking through the kitchen. Master had never kept it clean. She was sure master would be fine with his new friend. Oh well. Time for another nap.

That gave me a creepy feeling. Nice I have not felt that reading for a long time. I like the story even though I am now going to have to check under the bed and have the cats check above it for me. 🙂

Thanks! I often wonder what my cat sees that I can’t see and how indifferent she would be…

Nothing is freakier then having all three state silently at the door. Sometimes I wonder if they do it on purpose. 😹😹
