Lanterns of Dystopia – A Post-Apocalyptic Sci-Fi Novella

Check out my teaser for my new sci-fi novella Lanterns of Dystopia! You can find this book on Amazon and other platforms

What secrets lie hidden within the ruins of a world reclaimed by nature? In the future, where all is lost to the ravages of time, can human nature stand against the fury of mother nature? Rampant pollution, overpopulation, and reckless industrialization have taken the Earth over the edge of collapse. Humans have wrought their own destruction. Can they be saved? Can humanity be restored?

Time is running out…A small group of robotic ambassadors from the past were sent to uncover the mysteries of the future. But can they navigate this desolate post-human world before their energy expires?

The apocalypse. Doomsday. The end of man. Fire and Brimstone. We fear it. We have anxiety over it. We have nightmares about it. We recycle and use biodegradable products because of it. But there are very few of us who embrace it.

In 2007 I wrote this short story as an experiment. I wanted to see if a story could be told that was engaging, entertaining, and inspiring but also set in a desolate landscape where humans were extinct. At the time I was still learning the craft and the results were less than promising. Twelve years later I decided to take another stab at it and redeveloped the short story into a novella. This time I knew exactly what the story would be: a sci-fi adventure into the putrefaction of mankind’s death. In this version of the future New York has become a cesspool of rotting structures, fungus, and evolving new life. As bleak as it sounds the novella became an action-packed ride along the vein of Jules Vern’s Voyages and I Am Legend. While navigating this world the characters struggle against the odds, natural disasters, themselves, and time itself. It was a test to see how dark I could make the future while still holding onto that all too human feeling (the one that inspired me to never stop writing): hope.

Time is a constant flow of never-ending stories where cosmic elements collide and drift apart. We shelter ourselves from the truth that we will all eventually turn to dust. But the story never ends there. The dust becomes part of the Earth. It grows new life. In the aftermath of devastation lies the seeds of rebirth. When writing this project I imagined what life would be like in the absence of life. What life could prosper from the ashes of humanity’s sins? Could life grow again? Could humanity survive its own annihilation? What would it evolve into? What would the dominant life forms be like? Would they be plantlike? Would they, like humans, be parasitic?

A new breed of fungi proliferates in the cavernous dark, sprouting through a new type of cadaverous terrarium: a human skull.

A building collapses, spilling the contents of a thousand years of biological remains: human corpses.

The ancestor of man slithers through the pipes of the city’s ancient sewer system, seeing without eyes and feeding off micronutrients through its skin.

Lanterns is a journey into the unknown, into the depths of posthuman monuments, to search for a new meaning to life. The novella reflects what I attempt to achieve in all my writings: to find optimism and inspiration in dark places. Moss is a character who is stripped of his identity, his brain encased in a robotic sphere, and his memories replaced by a mysterious directive implanted by the corporation that had him cryogenically frozen. He struggles against the ticking of a battery clock to recover his past and save the future of civilization. Moss was meant to be a metaphor for humanity’s tendencies to give up on our humanistic nature, how we reject our inevitable demise, and how we tend to ignore the light at the end of the tunnel. A man who is lost to the pessimism and cynicism that was instilled in him from a previous generation. But what happens when there’s no one left to tell him to feel shame, to feel guilty, to feel defeated when all hope seems lost?

Lanterns of a Dystopia is a gritty sci-fi tale that delves into the darker aspects of human nature and explores the consequences of arrogance and environmental exploitation.

Synopsis:

Nothing lasts forever.

Deep within the bowels of the Earth lies a genetic revelation that reveals the truth of mankind’s downfall. Gary Moss has become disenfranchised by his time as a New York exec and accepts the proposal of a CEO, a proposal that would allow him to transcend time itself and undergo cryogenic hibernation. There’s nothing left for him in the old world, except to transcend the old world for the new. He realizes his peril when he wakes up to a dystopian future trapped in a mechanical and mental cage. Earth has become a desolate landscape of garbage and fungus.

Moss must race against the clock to restore humanity before his robotic power source runs out. Taking influence from H.G. Well’s Time Machine, Rip Van Winkle, and I Am Legend this dark dystopian tale attempts to ask the question: what would life be like if humans continued to dominate the planet? Lanterns of Dystopia is the dark sci-fi novella about humanity’s downfall and Moss’s survival against a world where humans have become an endangered species.

Cartoon Clusterf*ck – An Adult Fantasy Comedy Novella

Check out my teaser for my new fantasy comedy Cartoon Clusterf*ck! You can find this book on Amazon and other platforms

What do a toy rabbit, an angry video gamer, and a stuffed horse have in common? Absolutely nothing, but wouldn’t it be funny to thrust them into a world of fantasy and force them to get along? Max certainly doesn’t think so, especially considering he’s already a little hoarse. The rabbit is a little too hoppy but at least the horse is stable. You can find all these gut-busting jokes and more… in my new novella about a man trapped in his ego, trapped inside his childhood, trapped inside ill-fitting pants that pinch his thighs. Armed with only a wadded-up shirt, abundant forehead sweat, and a lack of self-control Max must punch his way through a cast of annoying cartoon characters to figure out how to break this new virtual reality before it’s game over. It’s a story that combines hilarious hijinks, fantasy, and adventure, offering a wild ride for gamer enthusiasts, cartoon lovers, and anyone in need of a good laugh.

This is a story I’ve wanted to tell since childhood which is appropriate considering it’s all about embracing your childhood! As children we all exist in a fantasy world of our own making, believing in an optimistic future that never seems to come. We wish and we dream of becoming a hero, a knight, a doctor, a firefighter, or even president. But when we grow old we lose that hope. We lose those dreams to narcissistic realism. Clusterf*ck was my attempt to force one man, one lonely narcissist, to rediscover that faded innocence, curiosity, and juvenile wonder, whether he wants to or not…During my journey I’ve struggled with my own biting pragmatism, that urge to purge oneself of playful daydreaming, and ruin a perfectly fun and hilarious story with a boring and mundane plot. I learned to let go and be myself. “Write what you know” has been a phrase that’s kept me going and inspired me to put this crazy rollercoaster of a ride to paper. Enjoy the ride as Max’s misadventure becomes a whirlwind of wisecracks, colorful landscapes, and violent outbursts.

Synopsis: When Max discovers his new gaming system is a gateway to another world, he gets really pissed…but he gets even more pissed when he finds out he can’t escape. Candy trees, marshmallow clouds, licorice grass, and rivers of soda, the sugary landscape seems so unreal and…stupid, but it’s more real than Max can bear (there are no bears.) He was standing in his kitchen playing with a new VR headset when he was transported to a colorful cartoon world with an obnoxious cast of characters that wouldn’t shut up! Max must brave the sugary elements and resist the urge to punch his way across this terrible childhood nightmare before he loses his sanity and possibly his life. With the help of his new friend, a half-wit, happy-go-lucky rabbit, they bumble their way through the cartoon land of Max’s childhood. Will he go insane or lose all his newfound friends in the process? Cartoon Clusterf*ck is a fantasy comedy about an adult man who denies his childhood only to be punished by it. He must come to terms with this new reality or risk going completely insane. Inspired by Saturday morning cartoons and an imaginative dream world, this adult tale reminds the reader of the importance of embracing our childhoods.

My novellas are published! Free copies available!

I finally did it! After a year of hard work, I’ve finally published three novellas and can now officially call myself a published author. Unfortunately, some writers don’t make it this far and to those writers and artists I saw: don’t give up! It may seem impossible; it may seem like the world’s against you. It may seem that even your friends and family want you to stop or “take a break” (although it’s always important to take a break). But don’t let those dark and useless thoughts turn you into a dark and useless lump. Everyone deserves to be heard. And those who persevere the longest, those who strive to achieve their goals, seem to have enough conviction to express those words with clarity, insight, wisdom, and power. Don’t let your dreams become your burden. You are beautiful. Celebrate yourself in whatever you do, show the world who you really are, never give in to those nasty gremlins in your mind, and give yourself time to wander and enough time to find your way back home. Celebrate yourself. Drink plenty of water. And check out my novellas below!

Now that my novellas are published, I’m eager to hear your thoughts! Reviews are essential to any author’s success. If you’re interested in leaving a review on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and other review sites, please let me know, and I can provide a free copy! Or if you’d like to send me a copy of a project you think I’d be interested in I’ll gladly do the same!
